We were a large group that spent the first week of Easter in Bonneval Sur Arc and knew that there was only one restaurant on the slopes. I would have thought with this monopoly that they could have charged high prices and served processed food. We were delighted to find that they specialised in local produce and the prices were extremely reasonable. The portion sizes were very generous and the children's meals were the same. Although the menu was understandably small there was more thanenough choice to please all twelve of our group. The inside was cosy and the best toilets we have used. No stairs to navigate in ski boots as toilets on the same level as the restaurant. The staff were amazing, they were so friendly and all seemed to live locally. They managed to get us seated together everyday despite how busy the restaurant was. They were patient with us and helped with some French lessons. We were really looked after and I think people really make a place. Fantastic customer service.
Bonneval sur Arc’s only slope-side restaurant in the ski season (this review), Le Criou also opens in summer for walkers. In winter for non-skiers there is pedestrian access via the Vallonet chairlift. The terrace has fine mountain views back down the valley or to the glaciers above. There is ample interior seating and the service is friendly.The menu has a genuinely local flavour featuring ingredients from the valley below. Starters include dried meats from the Maurienne region and salads with local cheeses. The Diot sausages come from the neighbouring village of Bessans, pastas include the Savoyarde ‘crozets’ and your steak, burger (or Diots) can come with a blue cheese sauce made from the village’s own Bleu de Bonneval. Main course prices (2014) ranged from 9 – 17 euros.As the only on-mountain eatery in winter Le Criou could probably get away with a standard fast food offering from the freezer. Instead it tries to give a real link to local food and local artisanal producers, and that deserves both praise and support.
